none of us are here by accident. i come from a family with a lot of experience suffering the pains and the joys of recovery from alcoholism, from my father to- who recovered and enjoyed many happy years, as well as some other relatives; a son who did not. and we lost him due to alcohol. we come full circle in a number of ways. i had the pleasure, about 25 years ago, of also being an affiliate director for the council in southern arizona, and then in '91 started my own company 20 years ago now, jorgensen-britts group, and we attack it from a couple of different angles. providing direct treatment back in the nineties, to now running full-service employee assistance programs where we work to intervene in the disease and get folks into recovery before they lose everything. i'm bev haberle, and i'm a person in long-term recovery, and that means that for the past 40 years, i haven't used alcohol or any other mood-altering drugs. to get this issue behind us. it is really clear that the american people don't like the idea that the economy is being held hostage to the fiscal cliff and middle-income taxpayers are being held hostage in order for republicans to get this bonus tax break on people's income above $250,000. far be it for me to give the speaker advice but there is an argument to be made to go ahead and vote against this, i'm not talking about everybody but a good chunk, maybe even a majority. let's get beyond this point and get on to other things and because as you know the biggest tax increase happens if we do nothing. that's a $5 trillion tax increase. what the president has proposed is taking $1.6 trillion of that revenue, take $1.6 trillion from high income earners but if we go over the cliff we get $5 trillion and on top of that the end of the payroll tax holiday which i believe we should continue in that form or find an alternative that has the same economic benefit going forward. according to the congressional budget office

none of us are above politics nor do the founders expect us to be, but obviously we should be aspiring to something greater than this. too often in recent years, members of congress have locked themselves in to a slate of inflexible positions, many of which have no hope of being implemented in a divided government. and some of these positions have been further calcified by pledges signed for political purposes. too often we have failed to listen to one another and question whether the orthodox views being promulgated by our parties makes strategic sense for america's future. the result has been intractablely negative public perceptions of congress. a rasmussen reports poll done just this month found that only 10% of likely voters gave congress a rating of excellent or good. for me, the irony is that having seen several generations of lawmakers pass through the body, i can attest that the vast majority are hardworking, generally interested in public service, and eager to contribute to the welfare of our country. often the public does not believe that. it's easier to assume that congress
